Elijah sat with his hands on the white marble top, one hand on top of the other, and his eyes shut. Eventually he said, “Submitting to the Ten Commandments is one of the most significant things humanity can do in order to be better human beings.” Then he got up, turned towards the palace, and walked away.
I felt no fear; I just wanted to stay there in that magical place, to hear more, to learn more. Then I opened my eyes to find myself back on my blanket in the Troodos Mountains under the shade of the pine tree. I looked up at the clear blue sky above me; sunlight fell on the hill in front of me; in the distance I could see Omodos’s central square humming with visitors.
I sat up, leaning against the tree trunk, and continued to read “Parashat Yithro” from the line my finger was lying on, verse 17: “Do not be afraid,” said Moses to the people. “God only came to raise you up. His fear will then be on your faces, and you will not sin.”
I closed the book and I thought about what my Spiritual Teacher, Elijah the Prophet, had just taught me. It fitted that verse so well; it made perfect sense.
If only all men and women could be aware of their souls, could connect with them and follow the ten rules the Creator had given to Moses—“God only came to raise you up. His fear will then be on your faces…”—then all human kind would avoid doing wrong—“and you will not sin.”
